Toongkateeyt

(2017)

Land taken, sold off, cleared, and settled.

For First Nation peoples, the colonisation of Australia attempted to dispossess and disconnect us from Country, culture, and community as the introduction of buildings and roads saw sacred sites and familiar grounds overrun. Toongkateeyt speaks to the inherent interconnectedness of land and identity. The layering of photographs taken in the present across Gunditjmara, Djab Wurrung, and Wathaurung lands – unconventionally mapping and melding lifetimes inherently exposing the trail of destruction of colonial interruption, bringing to the fore the everlasting strength through connection to Country and belonging that continues.
